Tonight’s opening pre-season friendly between Whitehaven Amateurs and Workington Reds has been postponed.
The hosts have reported a positive COVID test in their camp so the game, for the Shaun Hocking Memorial Trophy, has had to be postponed.
Hopefully the game can be fitted in later in the pre-season build-up ahead of Reds’ NPL resumption on August 14.
Reds were set to include an experienced trialist in their line up for the game but a second trialist, who had been expected to turn-out, was going to miss out because he is currently training with a League club.
Reds had planned to send a different group of players to take on Penrith tomorrow but will now include the West Cumbrian-based first teamers at Frenchfield.
Coach Steven Rudd said: “We are hoping there might be developments with the experienced trialist as he has been training with us for a while.
“The other lad has been travelling over from the north east with Kieran Charlton, our new signing and he has looked good. He has a decent pedigree and we believe he’s happy to sign but he got the chance to train with a League club this week and you can’t blame him.
“At first he thought he would be training and then be able to play for us on the Saturday but the club has asked him to play in a game for them.
“We have had a couple of young lads, recently released by Carlisle United, training with us as well.
“To be honest when Danny and I were discussing what was needed before he left our general opinion was that the squad didn’t need a lot of fixing. We already have two good lads added to the squad and if we can tie-up the trialist tonight that will be very good.”
Liam Lightfoot, released by Carlisle after spending time on loan with Kendal last season, has also been training with Reds but has had an opportunity to show his potential with a League club this week.
Reds will also need a second choice keeper to back-up Jim Atkinson and Isaac Robinson, who played on loan from Carlisle at Pickering last season, has now been released by the Brunton Park club and has been training with the west Cumbrians.
