Whitehaven’s Australian full-back Lachlan Walmsley has been nominated for Championship Player of the Round after last week’s starring performance against Swinton Lions.
The 23-year-old,who is making a strong bid to be included in the Scotland World Cup squad – through his maternal grandfather – scored two tries and kicked five goals in the 38-22 win.
The other contenders from the weekend are James Solenstall (Halifax), Craig Hall (Featherstone) and Brad England (Bradford).
Walmsley, in his first season of rugby league in this country, came through the Newcastle Knights and South Sydney systems where he played at a high level in the Under 20’s competitions.
He has had a starring role in several games this season as Whitehaven gradually consolidate in the Championship, making sure they continue at that level next year.
His grandfather George lived in Perthshire until emigrating to Australia after the War.
“I grew up hearing stories about Scotland, and the chance of having a shot at making the squad for the World Cup was a big draw for me,” he says.
