A £1 million programme to recruit more magistrates has been welcomed by a Cumbrian MP.
John Stevenson, who represents Carlisle, said the two-month pilot scheme by the Ministry of Justice was crucial to keep the wheels of justice turning.
The Government wants to target areas across the country to recruit more magistrates and promote the magistracy as an attractive option to a diverse range of potential applicants.
The work includes a marketing strategy to target under -represented groups, and a more modern application and recruitment process.
Mr Stevenson said: “The magistracy plays a crucial role in our justice system.
“Retaining our magistrates court here in Carlisle is vitally important, and the recruitment of magistrates is pivotal to this.
“It is pleasing to see a targeted marketing campaign and modern recruitment processes are being applied and I would encourage anyone interested in the role to come forward.”
