Eden Valley Hospice is calling for dogs and their humans to raise vital funds by walking 50, 100 or 150 kilometres during August as part of a new challenge.
Dog-lovers can raise money with every step they take throughout the month, whether it’s their early morning walk around the block, afternoon stroll in the park, or hillside trek at the weekend.
And the challenge isn’t just open to Cumbrian residents – people can take part wherever they are in the world.
Registration for the Hound Hike is free with every penny of sponsorship money going directly to provide compassionate care to those who need it most.
Eleanor Viney, fundraising manager, said: “We’re really excited about our first ever Hound Hike and are looking forward to seeing everyone out there with their four-legged friends, raising much needed funds for the hospice.
“Coronavirus has had a huge impact on our fundraising over the past 18 months, so this challenge is more vital than ever.”
Dog owners from several Carlisle-based businesses are also grabbing leads and pulling on walking boots to get involved in the challenge.
Tom Little, marketing manager at The Cumberland, said: “We think it’s amazing that the hospice is thinking of innovative new ways to allow everyone to get involved in fundraising.
“Monty the springer spaniel is much more popular and persuasive than me so the Hound Hike seemed like the perfect opportunity to get involved. We are hoping to hit the 50km total, walking around some of our local beauty spots and making some new friends in the Facebook group as well.”
Nick Kennon, managing director at Wragg Mark-Bell Solicitors, added: “My grandmother was very well looked after by Eden Valley in her final days in 1997. I have always remembered the respect and care she received. Whenever possible, I try to support their fundraising.
“Many years ago, I once did the Cumbrian Run to raise money for Eden Valley but these days dog walking to raise funds gets me and the dog out for exercise at the same time!”
Everyone who registers for the challenge will receive their Hound Hike fundraising kit including a matching doggie bandana and snood, and sponsorship forms.
Plus, to keep motivation high, there’s a Hound Hike Facebook group which will include suggestions for walking locations to keep everyone motivated, top tips for doggie treats, support with fundraising and a downloadable Paw Tracker to make sure every step is counted.
