Penrith earned their first victory of the Northern League season last night when they won 3-2 at Whitley Bay.
It was a thoroughly deserved success for Dave Hewson’s men who had actually gone three goals clear by the hour mark. The closing stages were made a little more fraught than they should have been as Bay pulled two goals back.
The Cumbrians had gone ahead on ten minutes when former Man City youth product Kingsley Grandison seized on a defensive error to drill home the opener.
There was a scare on 27 minutes when Bay thought they were in for an equaliser but skipper Grant Davidson made a timely goalline clearance.
Leading 1-0 at the break, Penrith were able to double their advantage nine minutes into the second half. A weak back pass was intercepted by Bryse Dean-Norman who applied the finish.
Six minutes later Penrith were in dreamland. Again a back pass was short and when the ball was played across the face of the goal Connor Shields had a simple task in netting.
When Hishi Lama pulled a goal back on 67 minutes it seemed to rouse the hosts and Penrith had to defend resolutely. Bay’s second goal from Jason Chanayire came at the start of stoppage time and the Cumbrians were able to see it through to the end.
