Workington Cricket Club skipper Matt Lowden hopes to be fit to lead his team in Sunday’s Higson Cup final with Furness.
He suffered a finger injury batting for Cumbria against Bedfordshire in their MCA Championship game and was forced to retire.
Lowden had scored five as Cumbria were heading for a heavy defeat when he was struck by a delivery from home pace bowler Matt Coles.
The finger was bleeding by the nail and Lowden was planning to have a hospital check on his return to West Cumbria.
Cumbria eventually lost by 234 runs to register their second defeat of the campaign – not the result they wanted ahead of Sunday’s 50-overs MCA Trophy semi-final at Keswick against Cambridgeshire.
Although Lowden expects to be able to lead Workington at Haverigg in the final, opponents Furness will be without opener Nathan Waterston who will be on county duty at Keswick.
There was a suggestion that because of a clash with Cumbria’s semi-final, the Higson Cup final could be played in September but the decision has been taken now to go ahead on Sunday.
Premier Division leaders Furness will be strong favourites for the game but Workington will go into the game on the back of an excellent victory at the home of previous leaders Keswick.
