Workington Academy’s headteacher said he was delighted with the GCSE results his pupils achieved today.

Des Bird said: “This cohort of students have had to deal with very difficult circumstances throughout years 10 and 11.

“The grades which students have received today are the result of teacher assessed grades based on numerous robust assessments.

“Students have had to work exceptionally hard to achieve these grades and we are delighted with the many successes of our students.

“A record number of our students will be continuing their studies with us at West Coast Sixth Form in September.

“Students who are going on to education, training or employment elsewhere leave us with our very best wishes.”

Among many successes are the following students

Evie Little achieved 5 grade 9s, 1 grade 8, 2 grade 7s and a Distinction*. Evie is going on to study chemistry, biology and English language at West Coast Sixth Form.

Beth Smith achieved 2 grade 9s, 4 grade 8s, 2 grade 7s and a Distinction*. Beth has applied to study history, performing arts and maths at West Coast Sixth Form.

Jessica Holliday achieved 5 grade 9s and 3 grade 7s. She will be joining West Coast Sixth Form to study history, ethics and maths.

Luke Thompson achieved 4 grade 9s and 2 grade 7s. Luke is an enthusiastic mathematician and scientist who will be studying maths, further maths, physics and chemistry at West Coast Sixth Form.

Sofia Hall achieved 1 grade 9, 4 grade 8s, 3 grade 7s and a Distinction* and will be studying A-levels in maths, English language and history at sixth form.

Dan Carter was the student who has shown the best progress over all five years at school.

He achieved a grade 8 in English, a grade 7 in maths and performed strongly in all of his other subjects. He is intending to study maths, physics and computing at West Coast Sixth Form.
