A record involving Workington Reds, which has stood for 57 years, could be broken tomorrow.
On Wednesday, April 22 1964 a crowd of 17,974 were in Valley Parade to see the vital Fourth Division promotion battle between Bradford City and Workington.
That attendance has stood since then as the club’s record crowd for a fourth-tier game – but they believe Saturday’s game with Oldham Athletic will break it.
The game at the Utilita Energy stadium (Valley Parade in the old days) is being billed as the homecoming, the first since COVID to have an unlimited attendance.
The club says that close to 17,000 tickets have been sold and believe the record will be broken.

In 1964 Workington won 2-0 to clinch promotion, drawing 0-0 in their final game three days later with Exeter to finish third in the table.
City missed out, ending up fifth three points behind the Reds.
The Workington goals that night came from Geoff Martin and Brian Kelly, the City full-back who put one past his own keeper.
That, of course, was Workington’s finest team in their 26 years as members of the Football League, with player manager Ken Furphy going on to cement his reputation at Watford, Blackburn, Sheffield United and New York Cosmos.
