A Cumbrian MP has written to Highways England urging them to press ahead with plans for a roundabout at Gilpin Bridge near Levens after two major crashes on the A590 in two weeks.
Earlier this month a cyclist in his eighties died after a collision with a van, and on Monday two air ambulances were called to a crash involving a car and an HGV.
In a letter to the acting chief executive of Highways England, South Lakes MP Tim Farron said: “While I know Highways England has been working on various safety improvements on other parts of the A590 such as at Newby Bridge and Cross-a-Moor, it feels like this dangerous junction has just been forgotten about.
“The tragic incidents of the past two weeks must surely hammer home that we cannot wait any longer to act.
“A roundabout at Gilpin Bridge is badly needed and I would strongly encourage you to do everything in your power to push this along.
“I would be more than happy to meet with your team to discuss what I can do to help move this important work on as quickly as possible.”
