A local author is to donate the profits from his new book to charities working to support women.
Ron Salmon has just published his latest crime novel, The Duty. It is based on Chief Inspector Suzanna McLeod, who leads a team of police detectives in Edinburgh.
“From Kincardine to Kolkata, Suzanna is determined to find the killer of a young woman found mutilated and drowned, and track down the man who knifed her own team member, DI Una Wallace,” said Ron.
“Illegal immigration, slavery, and brutality surface as she closes in. Suzanna’s up against her own Chief Superintendent’s nit-picking interference, plus Kolkata’s uncooperative police force and the violent gangsters who force impoverished, vulnerable women into sexual slavery – while navigating her own love-life dilemma.
“Threats, fights, chases, and undercover work ensue before she gains what she needs from tropical Bengal and returns to chilly Scotland to seek the evidence for convictions. The Duty is an incredible, challenging, emotional journey, from start to finish.”
The story is based on Ron’s experience during his time in India volunteering with a social enterprise, Freeset, that primarily helps women who have been trafficked into the huge red like district of Sonagachi, in Kolkata.
The Duty has been published on Amazon Kindle, under his pen name Harry Navinski – a name he adopted when writing articles during his RAF career. Ron has committed to donating all profits from The Duty to the organisations mentioned in the book that continue to combat human trafficking and the abuse of women.
When asked why he wrote about human trafficking, Ron said: “I spent the best part of six years in West Bengal and heard many stories of girls that had been abducted or tricked into going to Kolkata for work, then forced to become prostitutes. Their stories were heartbreaking. They inspired me to write about the plight of these women.”
Although now settled just over the border in Oughterside, near Aspatria, Ron still has family in Scotland and loves visiting Edinburgh.
