Armed police were deployed in Workington as officers received reports that a man with a gun was in the area.

The armed officers were sent to the St John’s ward area of the town on Friday as a precaution and police said there was no perceived threat to the public.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of stalking, possession of a firearm without a certificate and malicious communications.

He has been released on police bail.

Superintendent Dan StQuintin, head of Cumbria Constabulary’s public protection unit, said: “We take all reports of stalking incredibly seriously and would urge anyone who has been affected by stalking to contact police.

“We provide safeguarding, investigate the crimes and can refer you to specialist support services relevant to your needs.

“Even if you do not wish to pursue an investigation, we can put you in touch with a wealth of vital support services, from counselling to rehoming support, help is available and getting support is important.

“Support services can also be accessed independently, without any police involvement, by contacting independent charity, Victim Support.”

Victim Support can be contacted 24 hours a day on 0300 303 0157.
