Two West Cumbrian students have been nominated for a prestigious national award.

Leah Boyes and Louis Figes, who have just left year 13 at Energy Coast UTC at Lillyhall, near Workington, have been shortlisted in the National Cyber Awards.

The pair are vying for the title of Cyber Student of the Year and were nominated by their supervisor, Barry Wright.

The National Cyber Awards 2021 reward those who are committed to cyber innovation, cyber-crime reduction and protecting citizens online.

The awards ceremony takes place in London tomorrow.

Leah and Louis were part of a group of Energy Coast UTC sixth form students studying cyber security in partnership with Energus at its cyber labs.

Barry Wright said: “The Cyber EPQ is a big ask for learners, who already have a large workload with lessons, exams and assignments.

“COVID restrictions have made this especially difficult, and I feel this is why completing the qualification and getting through to the finals of the National Cyber Awards 2021 for the Cyber Student of the Year is an awesome achievement.’

Cherry Tingle, principal at the Energy Coast UTC, said: “We are absolutely delighted and very proud that two of our wonderful students are finalists in the National Cyber Award competition.

“It is an absolutely superb achievement and very well deserved by these two highly talented students. Very well done Leah and Louis!’
