An event is set to take place in Copeland that hopes to help businesses bounce back after coronavirus.

Copeland Council is looking forward to next week’s Residents’ Week, which runs from October 2 to October 10.

Copeland’s portfolio holder for tourism, Steve Morgan, said: “This initiative should encourage people to get out onto their high streets and interact with local businesses. Everyone who spends £10 with a participating business is entered into a prize draw. Businesses have donated all kinds of amazing gifts and experiences.

“If there are any businesses who haven’t yet signed up, I’d urge them to do so.”

There is still time for Copeland businesses to take part in the event by visiting https://cumbriaresidentsweek.co.uk/residents-week-add-your-business/

John Baker, CEO at Whitehaven Harbour Commission, which owns the Rum Story attraction in Whitehaven, said: “The Rum Story are absolutely delighted to take part in Residents’ Week.

“Our communities around us have never been more important and this initiative offers an excellent opportunity to engage with them, encourage participation and give something back. We are really looking forward to a busy week and to Residents’ Week being an annual fixture in the calendar.”

Cumbria Residents’ Week is being coordinated by Cumbria Tourism, and all businesses operating in the visitor economy are invited to take part.

It is hoped the scheme will help businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic by encouraging residents to sample the great attractions, venues, eateries, hotels and shops on their doorstep.

There is no cost to businesses taking part, apart from donating a prize, which could be free entry, an overnight stay, a free meal or gift voucher for example. Businesses will give residents a code allowing them to enter the draw.

If the week-long event is a success, it is hoped it will become part of the annual calendar in Cumbria.
