Five weeks of disruption planned for A590

Motorists in south Cumbria are due to be hit by five weeks of disruption as road markings and road studs are renewed.

Motorists in south Cumbria are due to be hit by five weeks of disruption as road markings and road studs are renewed.

National Highways will begin the work on various sections of the A590 on October 5, with an estimated duration of five weeks.

“The purpose of our work is to ensure we keep the network safe and operational, as well as improving journeys for our customers,” National Highways said.

The work will take place between the hours of 8pm and 6am and will be carried out in phases. The table below shows the detail for each phase:

  • Meathop to Cartmel lane junction – October 5, 6 and 7 – Full westbound closure
  • Newby Bridge to Backbarrow – October 8 and 15 – One side closed each night. Both directions of traffic through the open carriageway
  • Mill Side to Levens – October 11 – Full closure of single carriageway section and of eastbound dual to Church Road
  • Levens to Meathop – October 13, 14, 18 and 19 – Full closure in both directions between A5074 and Meathop roundabout
  • Brettargh Holt roundabout to Levens Lane – October 21 – Full westbound carriageway closure
  • Ulverston Booths’ roundabout to Haverthwaite junction – October 22, 25, 26 and 27 – Various 300m sections with traffic lights and convoy system. Moving each night.
  • Haverthwaite, in front of the train station – October 28 and 29 – One side closed each night. Both directions of traffic assisted through the open carriageway.
