Round two of the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League started with a real heavyweight clash – and produced a very special moment from Kevin Kirkham.
Away side Workington Conservative Club nicked the win, a 3-2 victory over fellow townies Station Road B but the match will go down in the memory for a simply superb individual performance.
Fresh from a TV pool debut just two days earlier multiple county pool and current county snooker champion, Kevin Kirkham, joined an exclusive league century break club with a magnificent contribution of 105 to take the first frame of the match.
There have only been a few players who have made a century break in the near 70 year league history,
After the applause had died down the fixture moved on and the next two frames were shared, Richard McCarthy winning for Cons and Peter O’Hagan proving victorious for Station B.
The score-line stood at 2-1 in Station B’s favour but at this point in the match the Cons side started to up their game as Ryan Barker won the next and team mate Julian Plaza carried on the momentum to win the decider to claim a brilliant 3-2 victory against their hosts and close rivals.
Division One’s Workington Veterans Club made it two wins out of two with a 4-1 home victory over Whitehaven Division Two outfit The Rack Shack.
Paul Mostyn took the first for the Vets but with a superb performance in frame two Peter McAvoy levelled the score for the Rack Shack.
Frame three also went the way of the home side and with Vets captain, Kevin Basnett, making decisive breaks of 30 and 31 in the next he ensured the match score moved to 3-1.
In the last, what initially looked like a straight forward win, took a slight twist toward the end. Steve Garroway managed to keep his cool to carry Vets to a 4-1 match victory.
Workington’s United Club also added to last week’s win with another 3-2 score-line, this time against fellow Division Two side in the form of Maryport Social Club.
Ben Scott took frame one to make the perfect start for Social side but as the United Club took the next three with wins from Mark Suitor, Clive Lister and captain Andrew Mitchelhill the match win was guaranteed.
The final frame of the evening offered some consolation for the Social outfit as Andrew Scott claimed the remaining point to pull the score-line back to a match-ending 3-2.
Workington Golf Club produced a confident performance away from home as they defeated Workington Legion 4-1. Ryan Ismay and Mark Brasted took the first two for Division One’s Golf Club but with Iain Torley in fine form he claimed the third as Division Two’s Legion trailed 2-1.
Phil Sorfleet dug deep in frame four as a solid display ensured the Golf Club took the match win at 3-1. The fifth and final frame of the contest produced the evening’s best break with Mark Cowen constructing a cool 33 to win the frame and match with considerable room to spare.
In the round’s final game of the week Division One’s Station Road A defeated division 2’s Flimby Social 3-2 in a match that saw every frame decided on the colours.
Station A’s Tom Thompson and Darren Lawson took the first two for the home side but in unusually dogged fashion Flimby captain Geoff Banton pulled one back for Flimby at 2-1.
The next would prove to be decisive from a match win perspective and with a typically grinding performance it was Station A’s Keith Telford who delivered an unassailable match score-line in winning frame four.
Again, with a match point to play for Flimby weren’t giving up and with a routine victory in the last it was Shane Evitts who pulled one back to finish the game at 3-2.
