A Cumbrian volunteer who has dedicated many years to local charities has been honoured with a prestigious award.
Frank Musker, who volunteers for local houses that are part of The Abbeyfield Society, was chosen from thousands of staff and volunteers worldwide to receive the Royal Patron’s Award.
The accolade, endorsed by The Prince of Wales, is awarded every year to those who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to The Abbeyfield Society and its member societies.
Frank is a long standing supporter of Abbeyfield House in Ulverston, a supported housing facility for 16 residents.
Frank also recently retired after six years on the board of trustees at Staveley House, a residential care home in Dalton-in-Furness managed by the Abbeyfield Furness Extra Care Society, and has supported Abbeyfield’s Alexander House in Bootle, and Bolton Lodge and Proctor House in Bolton le Sands.
Frank started volunteering at Abbeyfield House in the 1990s. His main contribution has been in health and safety and ensuring that the buildings itself are well maintained, in order to keep all residents, staff, volunteers and visitors safe.
An Abbeyfield spokesman said: “His analytical mind and common sense approach to problem solving are highly respected by the staff team, and his input has saved the house – and other Abbeyfields in the region – thousands of pounds in maintenance costs over the years.
“Frank has also thrown himself into everyday life at the house, with him and his wife Jean providing invaluable support with the planning and running of activities for the residents, ensuring that they have a vibrant and active social calendar.
“As well as in-house activities, the house organised (pre-COVID) regular outings and trips for the residents, for which Frank often volunteered as a driver.”
Frank is a well-respected member of the local community in Ulverston and has helped to raise the house’s profile in the area.
Frank was presented with his Royal Patron’s Award at a ceremony at the Abbey House Hotel in Furness Abbey.
Diane Dyke, a member of Abbeyfield North Property Team, who nominated Frank for his award, said: “Despite the vital support Frank provides to the various houses and the high esteem in which he is held, Frank remains the most courteous, personable and professional man anyone could ever wish to meet.
“It is truly wonderful to see such a dedicated, loyal and loved volunteer be recognised for the incredible dedication and service he has provided to Abbeyfield for over a quarter of the century.”
Senior house manager for Abbeyfield House, Debbie McGuire added: “Frank’s mother was a resident at Abbeyfield House 27 years ago, which is how he got involved with us.
“He has terrific knowledge of the local area am I am grateful to him for supporting me a lot in my early days at Abbeyfield and teaching me the ropes.
“Frank has made a real difference here. He worked relentlessly on the maintenance side, and he threw himself into all sorts of jobs, saving us thousands of pounds.
“He also gave us his time generously in other areas over the years, working to solve all sorts of problems and help us to deliver the best possible service.”
Frank said: “I was very surprised when I received a phone call saying I would be awarded the Royal Patron’s Award, and then a letter asking if I would accept it.
“Although I can think of other people who are just as, or possibly more, deserving than me, it is of course a great accolade that I am honoured to accept.”
