Two players familiar to Cumbria League followers were involved in Scotland’s T20 World Cup disaster against Afghanistan.
Bowler Safyaan Sharif was professional at Whitehaven two years ago while opening batsman George Munsey has been hired as a sub pro by Carlisle and Cockermouth.
Afghanistan had raced to 190-4 in their 20 overs before they dismissed the Scots for only 60 in 10.2 overs.
But the two with Cumbrian connections could hold their heads highest. Sharif took 2-33 from his four overs while Munsey top-scored with 25 after the opener was the fifth wicket to fall.
Sharif, 30, accounted for top-scorer Najibullah Zadran (59) and opener Mohammad Shahzad (22) while Munsey scored his runs off 18 deliveries.
In the 2019 season Sharif played in 16 matches for Whitehaven, scoring 400 runs at an average of 30.62 with a top score of 107 not out against Lindal Moor, He took 31 wickets at an average of 18,77.
Big-hitting Munsey, 28, twice played for Carlisle in 2018, scoring 41 against Workington and 39 against Cockermouth.
He had made one appearance in 2017 when he scored 53 in a League game with Wigton.
When Cockermouth booked him as a pro, however, the game was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The 28-year-old has played T20 cricket for Hampshire and Kent, but once hit 147 from 39 balls playing Gloucestershire 2nds in an unofficial T20 against Bath.
His century was brought up in 25 deliveries, having reached 50 in 17. He also scored six sixes in an over as his side reached 326-3 in their 20 overs.
