A new group has been set up for large employers to discuss issues, challenges and opportunities with other businesses and organisations.

The new Northern Strategic Employers Group will meet for the first time next month.

Organised by Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, it replaces the Carlisle Large Employers’ Affinity Group which ran many years ago.

The group can discuss a range of initiatives and changes relevant to local businesses. Businesses are currently facing a perfect storm of challenges around recovery from the COVID crisis, post-Brexit trading, supply chain issues and the need to move to net-zero so there’s lots to be discussed at the meetings.

The first meeting is being held on Wednesday, November 17 from 7.30am to 9am at Foxy’s Restaurant Carlisle, the NSEG is being sponsored by Burnetts.

Guest speaker os Jack Stopforth MBE, chair of the Borderlands Economic Forum, and the Borderlands Initiative will be the first area of discussion.

Suzanne Caldwell, managing director of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is a great opportunity for local businesses to come together at discover more about relevant local initiatives and what they mean to their businesses.

“And, as importantly, network with other local businesses and business issues in a relaxed and confidential environment. This is about businesses and key local bodies supporting each other and working together.”

David Gibson, partner and head of employment and HR at Burnetts, said: “It is imperative that businesses come together to identify best practice and common ground so that they are well placed to meet future economic challenges and opportunities.

“Burnetts are delighted to be sponsoring this key event and are committed to assisting businesses in the area to grow and develop, both regionally and nationally.”

The group will meet quarterly for around one-and-a-half hours. Events will be replicated throughout the county, covering topics relevant to business in the area.

This meeting is for those in senior roles in medium and larger employers, and it costs nothing to attend.
