Back-to-back wins for Penrith

Chris Humphrey was celebrating back-to-back wins for Penrith as the Bonny Blues moved out of the Northern League Division One relegation zone.

After a mid-week success against Thornaby, Penrith followed-up with a 2-1 win at Gainsborough – and the new manager believes they will continue to climb up the table.

Humphrey said: “When Shaun (Gardner) and I came in the chairman was pretty clear that our main priority was to keep the team in Division One.

“From what I’ve seen so far I think this team are more than capable of doing that and I think we will finish in a very respectable League position.

“Right from the start the squad has bought into what we are trying to do and they have really worked hard and are starting to reap the awards.

“It is a young squad, with a number of teenagers and apart from goalkeeper Aaron Taylor and Shaun, they are aged between 18 and 25.”

After a goalless first half Penrith had taken the lead on 66 minutes when good play down the right saw Jamie Armstrong provide a cross for Connor Shields to fire home.

Guisborough hit back three minutes later with an equaliser from Charlie Marshall but it did not take long for Penrith to regain the lead.

On 72 minutes Armstrong worked himself an opening and finished well for what proved to be the match-winner.

Humphrey said: “We gave Jamie a new role as a number ten and that’s four goals for him. He is a clever player and he can create a lot of problems for defenders.”

Penrith lie 16th of 20 clubs, with five wins from their 19 matches and only one of the four teams below them have matches in hand.

“That’s the end of our mid-week programme and I am confident we can start to climb the League and finish in a healthy position,” said Humphrey.
