Free parking for Christmas shoppers in South Lakes

Shoppers and traders are being given a festive boost with free parking on South Lakeland District Council-operated pay-and-display car parks on Sundays in the run-up to Christmas.

The offer applies to the Westmorland Shopping Centre Car Park in Kendal and all pay-and-display car parks operated by SLDC in the district.

However, the Brewery Arts Centre and Kendal College pay-and-display car parks in Kendal and Miller Bridge car park in Ambleside will nor be offering free parking.

The free Sunday parking offer will apply on: 

  • Sunday 28 November
  • Sunday 5 December
  • Sunday 12 December
  • Sunday 19 December

No contract permit-holder only car parks are included in the offer.

Councillor Robin Ashcroft, portfolio holder for economy, culture and leisure, said: “We make this offer every year to show our support for the diverse, unique and vibrant shops in our towns and villages in the run-up to Christmas.

“I would appeal to everybody looking to do some Christmas shopping to support their local shops and use our free parking offer to take the time to experience all the brilliant amenities and attractions these places have to offer.”

The following SLDC-operated car parks will offer free Sunday parking:

Ambleside

  • King Street
  • Lake Road
  • Low Fold
  • Rydal Road

Bowness

  • Braithwaite Fold
  • Ferry Nab
  • Glebe Road
  • Quarry Mount
  • Rayrigg Road

Grange-over-Sands

  • Berners Close
  • Hampsfell Road
  • Kents Bank Road
  • Main Street
  • Windermere Road

Grasmere

  • Red Bank Road

Kendal

  • Blackhall Road
  • Booths supermarket
  • Dowkers Lane
  • Highgate (Bowman)
  • Parish Church
  • Library Road
  • Peppercorn Lane
  • Kendal Museum
  • Kendal College
  • Sandes Avenue
  • South Lakeland House
  • Westmorland Shopping Centre

Kirkby Lonsdale

  • Booths supermarket
  • Market Square
  • New Road (number 1 and number 2)

Milnthorpe

  • Beetham Road
  • Park Road

Sedbergh

Low Fellside in Kendal is a contract permit-only car park and people will not be able to park there without displaying a valid permit.
