Ipswich Town have confirmed that they have sacked Paul Cook as manager after a 0-0 draw with League Two Barrow.
It was a thoroughly deserved performance by the Cumbrians who will host the replay at The Dunes Hotel Stadium in 10 days’ time.
After the game Ipswich chief executive Mark Ashton said that a change is needed’ in order for the club to build towards their long-term interests.
In a statement he said: “Firstly, we would like to thank Paul and his team for their efforts in what has been a difficult transition period for everyone.
“I know how much Paul wanted to succeed at this club. However, following discussions with the board, we have decided a change is needed for our long-term interests.
“At this moment, there is no one lined up to replace Paul. There will be an extensive search to find the best replacement for the Club.”
The Bluebirds had given a good account of themselves during the hard-fought encounter and although hanging on in the closing stages deserved their second chance.
In an early opportunity Josh Kay timed his run well to get on the end of a long clearance from goalkeeper Paul Farman and after cutting inside saw his shot slide just wide of the post.
Kay was almost in again after slipping past Toto Nsiala but the home defender did well to get and block Kay’s shot.
Joe Grayson was next in the firing line as he had home keeper Christian Walton scrambling to make a full-length fingertip save to keep out a free-kick over the wall.
A flag was raised against Josh Gordon when he powered a header against the post from a corner.
The Tractor Men had been slow into their stride but they did bring their fans to voice when Scott Fraser tried his luck from 25 yards and Farman.
That sparked a period of home pressure but the Bluebirds defended solidly and then had a good chance to take the lead when they got forward again.
Mark Ellis was free inside the area to meet a cross from Connor Brown but he didn’t get enough power or direction on his header which was easily claimed by Walton.
Substitute Joe Pigott almost made a sensational introduction at half-time as he rattled an early shot against the post.
When Barrow responded Kay was in a good position but lifted his shot over the bar. Then Kay had a go from range and an on-target effort was deflected just wide.
Town skipper Sam Morsy had a chance to win the tie in stoppage time but ballooned his shot wildly over the bar.
In the closing moments Cameron Humphreys headed against the bar and Barrow got through to a deserved replay.
