Help for older people in West Cumbria this winter

Well@Home campaign co-ordinator Mark Armstrong

A West Cumbrian charity for older people has launched a programme of support services this winter.

Age UK West Cumbria will be delivering Well@home and chief executive officer Jane Mindar said:  “We are working with a range of partners to develop what support is available for people during what is likely to be a challenging few months ahead.

“We are focused on what comes after Christmas as people face constraints on finances, services and the worst of the winter weather. The latest occurrence of Omicron has potential to add further constraints that could affect the most vulnerable.”

The most vulnerable will be able to receive support in keeping warm, well fed and safe. A range of support packs will be available across Copeland and Allerdale, including thermal wear, high grip slippers and food packs.

Mark Armstrong, an Age UK project co-ordinator, added: “These packs are an initial helping hand, but also a starting point for longer term support and connection to community not only through Age UK but other local charities and groups. We want people to know that they are not alone and that there are options out there to get assistance.”

Keeping warm at home is a challenge facing many this winter due to rising utilities prices.

Cold to Cosy Homes is one of many organisations working with Age UK to deliver support.

A spokesman said: “Cold to Cosy Homes are expecting a higher than normal number of requests for its free energy advice service this winter.

“As more people than ever feel the squeeze in the perfect storm of higher fuel prices, raised fuel price cap and removal of the top up to benefits, and of course a very cold and blustery start to the season along the west coast.”

Financial support continues thanks to donations matched through Cumbria Community Foundation.

With Winter Warmth funding ongoing, a further Household Support Fund will go live during the winter months, offering over-50s in up to £150 in support for household costs and bills (means tested).

Age UK West Cumbria will administer Allerdale’s grants, while Copeland Age Advice Service will dispense grants for Copeland.

Individual referrals for all forms of support via Well@Home can be emailed to [email protected] or call 01900 844670.
