Plans are in place to close a section of a popular West Cumbrian beach this afternoon after a piece of ordnance has been reported.
The area between Sea Mill Lane and the Cafe at St Bees will be closed to allow HM Coastguard teams and a bomb disposal team to make the area safe.
A statement from Whitehaven Coastguard said: “It is possible there will be a controlled explosion(s) conducted to make this item safe.
“Once the item is uncovered by the outgoing tide, the public exclusion zone identified above will be put in place until this work is complete.
“We understand many people like to enjoy a walk on the beautiful coastline on New Year’s Day.
“As such, we would like to reassure the public that this closure will only be in place for as long as is absolutely necessary to ensure public safety.
“For your own safety, please do not attempt to encroach on the area we are working within.”
