Detectives investigating the death of a man at Wigton’s Futamura factory have confirmed that no criminal police investigation will take place.
Emergency services, including paramedics and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service were called to Futamura, off Station Road, early on Christmas Eve to a report that a worker had collapsed on site.
Alec Cole was taken to hospital in a critical condition, and two others were also taken for treatment and were discharged later that day.
Following the incident, Futamura issued the following statement: “It is with profound sorrow that Futamura must confirm that despite the efforts of all the medical staff involved our friend and colleague, Alec, passed away in hospital on December 25.
“Our thoughts are with Alec’s family and friends at this devastating time.
“An investigation was immediately opened with the support of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, police and the Health and Safety Executive and the company is cooperating fully with that ongoing investigation.”
A police spokesman said: “Cumbria police is liaising with the HSE. Whilst there will be no criminal police investigation, Cumbria police will provide assistance to the coroner if and where appropriate going forward.”
Any further investigations are expected to be led by the Health and Safety Executive, the government regulator.
