Workington Reds thought all their birthdays had come at once on Saturday when opponents Glossop North End conceded three own goals in a 5-1 defeat.
But for the genial Glossop president Dave Atkinson there was only one birthday that officially counted – his own 63rd.
When Reds visited Glossop in early October, Dave mentioned that they would be coming up for the return on his birthday, January 8.
Reds director Les Byers said: “He is a fantastic role model for non-league clubs and Glossop always make us so welcome and look after us when we go there.
“When he told us it was his birthday on the return game at Borough Park we decided to make his visit a bit special and present him with a surprise birthday cake topped with blue and white candles.
“I remember tweeting at the time of our game down at Glossop our thanks for the great hospitality and that North End were a lovely club with a proud history. We always enjoy our visits there.
“He was surprised we had remembered but thrilled to bits. He’s a genuine, friendly gentleman.”
A quick check of the record books suggests that was the first time the opposition had gifted Reds three own goals in one game.
