Vandals have run amok in a West Cumbrian park, causing thousands of pounds-worth of damage to lighting and trees, less than 24 hours after they were put in place.

Workington Town Council had installed new lampposts and planted trees in Vulcan Park in Workington, but the lampposts have been damaged and trees cut down.

A statement from Workington Town Council said: “Less than 24 hours since they were installed, new lighting posts in Vulcan Park have been damaged.

“As if this wasn’t bad enough, a number of trees in our park have been vandalised and actually cut down! Why?

“If anyone has any information on these crimes, please report it asap to the police on 101 or online https://www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it/reportacrime“

The vandalism comes three days after it was announced that CCTV would be installed in the park to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Workington Town Council has announced it had been given £22,262.90 by the Safer Streets Fund for the CCTV and Cumbria County Council was funding the lighting.

Since taking over the park from Allerdale Borough Council in 2018, the town council said it had received numerous complaints from people about dog fouling, anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
