Matt Davies, of Jo’s Appeal

An appeal set up in memory of a Barrow woman who died after developing ovarian cancer has donated £1,000 to the oncology unit at Furness General Hospital.

Jo Davies died in August 2015, and Jo’s Appeal was set up in her honour to raise funds for local gynaecological cancer charities.

Run by Jo’s husband Matt Davies and her mum Norma Halpin, the appeal has raised thousands since it was launched in 2016.

In December, the appeal donated £1,000 to Bay Hospitals Charity, to be used in support of the oncology service at Furness General Hospital.

Funds were raised through activities throughout 2021, including including sponsored hikes and bike rides, jam and cake sales, craft fayres and Christmas wreath-making classes led by Norma.

The appeal also launched Meg’s Mashups, a series of fund-raising outdoor garden parties.

The events were named after Patterdale terrier Meg, who was Jo’s favourite four-legged friend and has become the unofficial Jo’s Appeal mascot.

Bay Hospitals Charity funds the latest equipment for University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust to help make patients more comfortable and ensure they get the best possible care and treatment.

UHMBT non-executive director Adrian Leather said: “We are very grateful to Matt and Norma and everyone who supports Jo’s Appeal for their continued support of the Furness General Hospital oncology unit.

“The care and compassion of the team on this unit makes a real difference to the Furness community, and it is wonderful to see Jo’s memory honoured in this way.”
