A West Cumbrian has been invited to training with a view to being selected for the UK Armed Forces Under-23s rugby union squad.
Ryan Scott, 22, of Cockermouth is equally at home in either code, playing union for Aspatria and league for Cockermouth Titans. His father Mike is coach of the Aspatria team.
The Armed Forces Under-23s will be playing three fixtures this season and the training/selection sessions will be held from February 9 to 12.
Scott operates at centre or stand-off for Aspatria while he is mainly a loose-forward for the Cockermouth Titans, winning the award as the club’s player of the year chosen by the referees.
The Titans, who start their season in the Cumberland ARL Premier on March 5, have selected Scott as their vice-captain for the coming 2022 season.
His nomination for the UK Armed Forces squad comes after representing the Royal Navy Under-23s and he has also played for the RN rugby league side.
The split seasons for union and league means he is able to play for both Aspatria and Cockermouth, leave permitting, from his Royal Navy base at Faslane, Glasgow.
It is the navy’s headquarters in Scotland and is best known as the home of Britain’s nuclear weapons, in the form of nuclear submarines armed with Trident missiles.
