Prime Minister Boris Johnson has committed to return to Cumbria soon after his visit was cut short yesterday.

Mt Johnson visited the Cumberland Infirmary’s new cancer care centre in Carlisle yesterday and then went on to a private function at the Hunday Manor hotel, near Workington, to meet Conservative councillors.

He was due to visit Whitehaven’s Beacon Museum this morning to meet with the National Nuclear Laboratory and Rolls-Royce to hear West Cumbria’s case for the area to become the location for a new nuclear power station.

However, the ongoing threat over Ukraine by Russia meant Mr Johnson had to return to London.

His phone call to American president Joe Biden last night to discuss Ukraine took place from Cumbria.

Copeland MP Trudy Harrison said: “We were pleased to discuss the future of Cumberland with the Prime Minister during his visit on Monday.

“The Prime Minister was on top form, engaging with local leaders; he made time for everyone and all were thrilled to have his ear.

“We were obviously disappointed, but understanding however, of his need to return to London earlier than planned, due to impending threats by Russia. However, he has committed to return to Cumbria soon.”
