Ambleside Sports set to return this summer

Ambleside Sports is set to return this summer.

The Lake District’s oldest and most traditional of sporting spectacular events will be back after two years at Rydal Park on Thursday, July 28.

The event features track cycling, running, Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, hound trails, fell races and children’s sports, plus craft stalls, sideshows and refreshments across the vast site between Ambleside and Rydal.

Ambleside Sports is a celebration of the landscape and traditions of the Lake District, starting with the first event of the day, the Rydal Round, when runners race around the iconic Fairfield Horseshoe.

“It has been a very difficult time for everyone involved in our organisation,” said president Jak Hirst.

“During the pandemic we lost several of our well-loved and loyal supporters, including Tucker Mason, Roger Robson, John Wilson, and especially our honorary life member Pete Bland, who died from COVID.

“Pete was nothing less than a permanent fixture here, a winner of our races, who then became one of the organising team, managing the Rydal Round on behalf of the Fell Runners Association.

“On Sports Day, we will mark his loss, and the deaths of all our friends and supporters over the last two years, with a two-minute silence before the first event, which is, appropriately, the Rydal Round.”
