Kendal Town Council has called on the Government to act now to help Ukrainian refugees.
The town’s mayor Doug Rathbone said: “The people of Kendal have shown their support. There are signs of solidarity with Ukraine’s plight all over town. There are collections in the schools and shops, flags and vigils, but what the people of Ukraine need most is our practical help.
At the council’s meeting on Monday, an emergency motion was put forward by Cllr Matt Severn, condemning Russia’s armed forces for their aggression and calling on the Government to be more proactive in its assistance for refugees from the conflict.
Unanimous support was offered by councillors from across the political spectrum, as they voted as one to demand swifter action by the Government to offer shelter to many more of the two million refugees fleeing to Poland and other neighbouring countries.
The Mayor and Council thanked the people of Kendal for their generosity and work in supporting the people of the Ukraine.
Cllr Rathbone and volunteers collected cash for Ukraine refugees at Saturday’s football match at Kendal Town.
