Cockermouth School has announced the appointment of a new headteacher.

Richard King, who has been acting as interim headteacher since September 2021 has been appointed to the role.

Andy Ward, chair of governors, said “The governing body of Cockermouth School are absolutely delighted to appoint Richard as the new headteacher.

“After a thorough and rigorous assessment of both external and internal candidates, Richard came out as the strong, credible and driven leader we need to take the school forward.”

Richard, who was previously head of school and deputy headteacher, has been at Cockermouth School for over 20 years.

Andy added: “The last two years have been an immense challenge for all schools, and our staff, students and parents have shown real tenacity and resilience through this period.

“The Senior Leadership Team have led us successfully through the pandemic and Richard and his team are determined to move ahead stronger than ever and ensure we continue to be one of the highest performing schools in the north of England.”

Richard said: “I am delighted and honoured to have been asked to lead Cockermouth School as headteacher. We have a wonderful student body, of whom I am very proud, and a talented, passionate and committed staff team. I am excited to lead the school through its next phase to deliver our vision of providing an exceptional learning experience for all.”
