There was a sense of rough justice for Workington Reds after their 0-0 draw at promotion rivals Leek Town.
One was of their own making, but the other was down to the officials, in a game which the Cumbrians dominated for long periods.
They had a glorious chance to win it early in the second-half but Steve Rigg’s rather tame penalty was easily saved by Danny Roberts.
But earlier in the game Rigg scored a perfectly good goal only to have it ruled out for offside, which photographic evidence later showed was the wrong decision.
Manager Chris Willcock said: “I feel gutted because at the time the lads were adamant that Leek had a player keeping Riggy on-side. A picture doing the rounds clearly shows that.
“Its disappointing not to have won a game we dominated and in which our goalkeeper was virtually redundant.
“I certainly cant fault the lads for their effort and the football we produced. We just lacked a cutting edge which is strange considering the quality we have.”
In a positive start by the Reds skipper Brad Carroll crashed a header against the bar and Rigg had a goal disallowed for offside.
Although Leek did come more into it, creating an even game, they could only test Jim Atkinson once and he saved comfortably from Tim Grice.
Brad Hubbold was a probing architect of some promising Reds moves but he could have scored just before the break. A slalom type run and carried him through several defenders and when he released the ball to go for the return pass was guilty of a fresh air shot when he looked a likely scorer.
Reds completely dominated the second half as Leek seemed happy to settle for a point. The defenders were prepared to put bodies on the line and made several brave blocks inside their area.
Dav Symington screwed one of his blockbusters wide, Hubbold was just wide stretching to reach a Symington cross and right at the death Sam Smith put a back post header wide from a Symington corner.
