Workington Reds Academy visit Liverpool

Workington Reds Academy continues to break new ground giving youngsters valuable experience at Premier League clubs.

Manchester City and Newcastle United have both been visited by various age groups and the latest club to host the young Reds was Liverpool.

The Under-10s went to play in a festival of football organised by the Anfield youth set-up with Workington and Wigan Athletic the guests.

Head of the Academy, Brian Dawson said: “We were invited to take part in this festival for Under-9s but took our youngsters from the next age up.

“They competed well, winning two games, drawing three and losing two, and Liverpool said they will certainly be asking us back.

“If you don’t do well, and conduct yourselves well, you won’t be invited again and I was delighted that we did both.

“We try and attract the best players we can from a wide area and actually have youngsters from as far afield as Millom, Barrow, Carlisle, Keswick and Workington.

“We are trying to develop a pathway for the kids to come through from the Academy to the Development squad and then on to the first team.

“Getting them experience at League clubs is great for them and we have invites coming up from Preston North End, Blackpool and Carlisle United.”
