Tight semi-finals for President’s Cup

The two semi-finals in the Workington Sunday League’s President’s Cup were both extremely tight affairs.

In the end Sun Inn and Northside prevailed to set up a final at Borough Park on Sunday, May 1.

Sam Irving was the hero for Sun Inn when he scored the only goal of the game which was enough to beat Deer Orchard.

Northside have had a couple of set-backs recently but they got back on track at Dearham with a battling 2-1 win.

Jamie Bramley and Darren Little scored the goals for Northside with Beau Grimley netting for the hosts.

In the Division One Divisional Cup JJ’s were 3-0 winners at Sun Inn Athletic to book their place in the semi-finals.

Goals from Andrew Blackburn, Callum Killick and Bradley Glaister gave them the victory, although Athletic also qualify.

The semi-final ties will be played on Sunday, April 17 and will be: Sun Inn Athletic v Flimby and Maryport Athletic v JJ’s.

There was a reminder that the pandemic can still rear its ugly head as the Division One game between Highfield and Maryport Athletic was postponed because of Covid in the Cockermouth team’s squad.

Unluckily both the Workington League’s contenders have been drawn away in the semi-finals of the Sunday County Cup so face 10.30am kick-offs in Carlisle this weekend.

Sunday’s games are: Scotby v Salterbeck and Inter Pirelli v Maryport Athletic.

In the Workington League there is a semi-final (2pm ko) in the League Cup with Northside playing Dearham again after their President’s Cup clash last week. This one will be played at Curwen Park.

Sun Inn will host Blue Bell in the Premier Division while Senhouse have a home fixture with JJ’s at Moss Bay Road in Division One.

Midweek games commence on Wednesday, April 6 with two fixtures – Premier Division: Sun Inn v Blue Bell and Division One: JJ’s v Sun Athletic.
