A former Lake District businessman is donating an ambulance and driving it to the Ukrainian border packed full of medical supplies.
Johnnie Curwen, 50, has already raised more than £10,000 and just needs another £3,500 to get under way.
Johnnie, whose family all come from Cumbria, used to run a small hotel near Windermere but decamped to the south of France a few years ago.
He has just started a Gofundme page and said: “I’m so grateful to everyone who has donated so far – we just need a final push to get us over the line.
“I’ve been speaking with the Ukrainian humanitarian aid hub in Lviv and they desperately need the ambulance.
“They have specifically asked me to stock it with as many first aid kits, sterile bandages, painkillers, tourniquets , plasters and gloves as possible.
“If anyone feels like helping me , please did deep and contribute however large or small.
“What is happening over there is barbaric and a war crime, innocent women children and families are being targeted and wiped out.
“It’s unthinkable but I fear we are really close to World War Three right now, someone needs to stop Putin.”
Curwen, a father of two, who now runs a property management company on the Côte d’Azur, will deliver the ambulance himself to the Polish border where he will hand it over to Ukrainian officials.
He is hoping to make the journey by next weekend if the final funding comes in.
He still returns regularly to Cumbria where his mother Susan Thornely was a former High Sheriff.
