Detectives investigating a suspected serious assault in Workington have charged a man with causing wounding with intent.

Eddie Coid, 34, of Thomas Road, Workington, is due to appear before the town’s magistrates’ court this morning following enquiries carried out this week.

Investigations were launched after officers were called in the early hours of Monday.

This followed concerns for the welfare of a man, 34, of West Cumbria, found by passers-by in a back lane off Milburn Street.

The man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries. He was in a critical but stable condition today.

Three other people were also arrested as part of the investigation.

A man, 51, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released under investigation. Two other people were released with no further action.

Enquiries continue and detectives continue to appeal for anyone with information or who may have heard or seen any altercation or disturbance in the area to come forward.

You can report online at www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it –  or you can phone on 101 quoting log 11 of March 28.

Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
