Police have stated that disorder has “no place” at sporting fixtures after reported trouble at a prestigious football cup final involving two Eden teams.
Appleby met Penrith-based Wetheriggs United on Saturday at the neutral venue of Kendal’s Parkside Road in the Westmorland FA Senior Cup final.
Appleby ran out 3-2 winners in a match between the two Westmorland League first division sides.
But as boisterous behaviour off the pitch — reportedly between rival supporters — boiled over, police were called to the stadium. They did so “following reports of some disorder connected to spectators at a football match”, said a Cumbria Constabulary spokesman.
“Reports received included smoke flares being thrown and an assault,” the spokesman said today. “Such disorder has no place at sports matches, where the majority of spectators behave in a respectful manner and enjoy the occasion.
“Investigations are continuing.”
