The second semi-final of the Whitehaven Cup was the only game played at the weekend in the Cumberland County League.
Workington Athletic hosted Aspatria to decide who would contest the final against Workington Reds Development.
It was Aspatria, pipped for the Premier Division title by Pirelli, who got through 2-1.
Both teams had to contend with a strong wind on the open spaces of the artificial surface at Lakes College. Aspatria had the elements in their favour first and they started the better of the two teams.
They created a couple of good scoring opportunities but were unable to convert these into goals.
It was Richard Hudson who finally got Aspatria onto the scoresheet after 20 minutes.
Darryl Creighton and Andrew Trestianu were involved in some neat approach play setting Hudson free to find the back of the Athletic net.
The score was increased when Wayne Iredale fired a 25-yard effort into the top corner after 30 minutes.
Despite their best efforts, neither side were able to affect the score line with Aspatria taking a 2-0 lead into the interval.
It was Workington Athletic who had the major share of possession in the second period.
Aspatria found themselves for much of the half with their backs to the wall in order to preserve their two-goal advantage.
Athletic put Aspatria under tremendous pressure and with 65 minutes on the watch they made a deserved breakthrough.
It was Kevin Connelly who reduced the arrears, pouncing on a slip by an Aspatria defender. He picked up the loose ball, took it forward and deposited a shot beyond the Aspatria custodian to pull a goal back.
Athletic pushed hard to restore parity, creating numerous scoring opportunities, however, they were unable to breach a resolute Aspatria defence who were glad to hear the final whistle, ensuring their place in the final of the competition.
