Former Whitehaven favourite Lachlan Walmsley made a welcome return to Super League at Magic Weekend after a long injury absence.
The 28-year-old Australian scored a try in Wakefield’s 48-6 win over Castleford Tigers as the Magic Weekend was played for the first time at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Walmsley had been on the sidelines since Round Two of Super League after going under the surgeon’s knife for a patella tendon injury.
But he has admitted he needs to find his form quickly to earn himself a new contract for next season as his current deal with Trinity runs out at the end of the present campaign.
He said playing again gives him the opportunity to put himself in the shop windopw and potentially he has another ten games to play.
Walmsley said: “I was probably thinking I was running out of time. But I’ll always back my own ability and I know I’m a decent player, so hopefully other teams can see that as well.
“I’m hoping Magic Weekend helped put my foot forward somewhere, or at Wakefield again. I’m not too sure. The club hasn’t officially said anything so it’s a waiting game. We’ll see what they want.”
Walmsley had spent one outstanding season with Whitehaven in 2021 when he scored 15 tries.
Although Haven tried to keep him he moved to Halifax and he scored 68 tries in 54 games during his two-year stay there before joining Wakefield for the 2024 season.
