Workington’s Veterans Club B have put their L&L Property Contractors Snooker League Division Two runners-up disappointment to one side.
They romped to a 3-0 victory in the Eric McMullen Memorial TKO Handicap final against Workington Golf Club.
The League Cup final started with Vets B’s Sal Cakmak (+23 handicap) making a few small contributions to move into a tidy lead with the Golf Club’s Phil Sorfleet (+16) struggling to make his mark.
However, with a couple reds and colours Sorfleet gave himself some hope with just 27 points remaining.
As the low value colours were traded Sorfleet could still win, albeit needing the last three balls to force a re-spotted black. Cakmak was having none of this however and with a good pot on the blue the Vets B cueist eventually went on to win 72-48 for a 1-0 match lead.
The second frame of the match saw both Vets B’s Shane Evitts (+29) and the golf club’s Lewis Tilley (+35) trade blows throughout to the point where only the colours were left on the table and Evitts was five points to the good.
Although this was a only a small lead, by the time Evitts cracked the yellow in and followed it up with green, brown and blue Tilley now needed snookers.
In fact Tilley made a fine effort to get the penalty points he required but in potting the pink by mistake Evitts took the frame 53-42 for a Vets B 2-0 advantage.
Vets B’s Michael ‘Sid’ Walker (+28) got off to the best possible start in frame three by adding to his handicap advantage to lead the golf club’s Ryan Ismay (+5), 40-0.
With the next scoring visit now crucial to the frame outcome both players were feeling the pressure. However, this expectation didn’t seem to bother Walker and with a superb break of 38 the Vets B cueist won the frame 78-10 for a crushing frame, match and title win.
