Barrow have been linked with several names since the club revealed it had approached their main target about taking on the vacant manager’s role.
Bookies favourite is Sam Hird, a former Barrow defender, currently working with ex-Bluebirds boss Ian Evatt at Bolton.
Gateshead boss Mike Wiliamson and Halifax manager Pete Wild are two others who have been linked with the job.
Barrow issued a statement saying: “The club can reassure all supporters that work is continuing behind the scenes to appoint a new first team manager as we look ahead to the 2022/23 League Two campaign.
“We have worked swiftly to identity our top target and can confirm that on Monday an approach was made to his current club to ask for permission to speak to him regarding our vacancy and agree appropriate compensation.
“We will keep fans updated on any further developments.”
Hird helped the club to promotion from the National League under Evatt two years ago.
A year ago Hird rejoined Evatt at Bolton with special responsibility for the reserve team in the Central League and also to work with the first team.
