Jarrod Sammut missed Barrow’s Cumbrian derby against his former club Workington Town to play international rugby for Malta.
It was a starring performance from the 35-year-old half-back as he scored almost half of Malta’s points in a 66-6 win over Montenegro in the inaugural Medieval Shield.
Played at Mosta FC’s Charles Abela Stadium, it was Montenegro’s first-ever international so it was no real surprise that the more experienced hosts ran out convincing winners.
Sammut was in irresistible form with a hat-trick of tries from the 12 his side scored and he put over nine goals for a personal contribution of 30 points in sweltering hot conditions.
Afterwards Sammut said: “It’s great for the international game. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make this happen and the Maltese community really got behind us.
“For me personally it’s not about the individual points haul, but more a great effort by the team to come away with a home win which we’ve been desperate for over the last 10 years. I want to thank everyone involved for making the day so special.
“The body’s holding up really well and I’ve got some years left in me, because I’m feeling great and still loving the game.
“It would be a step back if I didn’t pass on my knowledge and experience, that’s why I love playing for Malta.”
Sammut will be back with Barrow for Sunday’s trip to Dewsbury Rams in the Betfred Championship when Barrow can do their Cumbrian neighbours Whitehaven and Workington a favour by bringing back the points.
Both Haven and Town face the toughest tests possible as they visit the top two respectively in Featherstone and Leigh.
