Arson probe launched after fire at Penrith park

An arson investigation has been launched following a fire at Penrith’s Castle Park.

The blaze, which happened overnight last Thursday, happened in the entrance to the park and damaged the memorial gates archway.

Three wheelie bins were set alight.

An Eden council spokesman said: “The surrounding memorial gates archway, which houses two benches, has been damaged by the fire and there are concerns over the sandstone and World War One memorial plaques. The damage appears to be from suspected arson.

“The area has been cordoned off with temporary metal fencing whilst the area is cleared and made safe and secure. Cumbria Constabulary have been informed and are investigating.”

Lissie Sharp, communities portfolio holder for Eden District Council, said: “I am saddened and extremely disappointed to see this deliberate and senseless act of vandalism to the war memorial at the entrance to Castle Park.

“This behaviour is unacceptable and dangerous, I am only glad that no one was hurt. I am thankful to everyone involved who have responded to the incident. A crime number has now been logged with the police who are dealing with the incident.”
