A walker is in 50s was helped by Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team after falling on Striding Edge.

The team was called by Cumbria police at around 12.50pm on Sunday about the incident.

The walker had sustained head and leg injuries after falling around five metres.

The team tried to contact the wife of the walker, but there was a lack of phone signal and she could not be reached.

Due to the location and reported injuries, a Coastguard helicopter was requested to assist in the rescue.

On their arrival they attempted to get the winch paramedic to the scene, but due to the wind conditions, were unable.

Team members who had climbed on foot from Greenside were then flown from Red Tarn outlet onto Helvellyn summit and made on foot onto Striding Edge.

Team members put the casualty onto a stretcher and lowered him around 150 metres from Striding Edge.

The Coastguard helicopter with some excellent flying managed to winch the casualty on board and he was transported to hospital at Carlisle for further treatment.

The rescue involved 15 team members and took around four-and-a-half hours.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team said: “This rescue enabled us to use the recent purchased VSM patient monitoring machine which was bought through generous donations. Without these donations the team could not operate at such a level. Thank you for each and every donation given.”
