A new unitary authority is set to hold its first ever scrutiny committee next week.
Cumberland Council, covering Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland, is currently operating as a shadow authority. This means that for this year only it will operate alongside the existing county, city and borough councils in the patch.
On April 1, 2023, they will be abolished and Cumberland Council will take over as the sole authority in the area.
The shadow authority is currently holding meetings to lay the groundwork, ensuring that it can eventually run as a “safe and legal” council.
Eden, South Lakeland and Barrow-in-Furness are seeing the same process with the establishment of the new Westmorland & Furness Council.
And on Monday June 20, the Civic Centre in Carlisle will see Cumberland Council’s first Scrutiny Committee.
The role of these committees in local government is to ensure the council delivers services of the best possible quality. Items to be discussed include an update on the status of local government reorganisation, the process that saw the creation of Cumberland Council.
LGR programme director Kim Rennie will present a report which includes a breakdown of the work streams involved in setting up the two new councils.
The public meeting takes place in the Civic Centre’s Flensburg Room at 10.30am.
