Aspatria celebrated their first win of the season after a hard-fought and evenly contested game with Maryport.
The Holmen Iggesund Premier Division clash finished 36-34 in Aspatria’s favour after Maryport had held a slender 12-10 interval advantage.
The Hornets scored seven tries to Maryport’s six in an entertaining clash, and that was what made the difference as Maryport landed five goals to Aspatria’s four.
Although they had trailed at the break by just two points Aspatria seized the initiative until Maryport scored two tries in the last ten minutes.
Crucially for Aspatria, however, Darryl Creighton completed his hat-trick in between those two late Maryport scores and it was enough to see them home.
Apart from Creighton’s three tries his all round performance won him the man of the match award. The other Aspatria tries came from Rocco Okesene (2), Jack Wilson and Ross Barton. Okesene converted four.
The Maryprt tries came from Chris Ivison (2), Luke Baker, Andrew Patterson, man of the match Josh Patterson and Scott Atherton. Josh Patterson kicked five goals.
Wath Brow were weakened for their first team trip to York Acorn and the knock-on effect applied to the Carl game at home to Glasson.
The Allerdale side took full advantage as they ran out 44-16 winners after it had only been 16-10 at half-time.
Joe Kirkup emerged as Glasson’s man of the match scoring four tries, the first two coming in the 8th and 19th minutes along with a touchdown from evergreen Matthew Johnson in the 23rd minute. Two tries were converted by Luke Johnson.
Hornets finished the half better and tries by Andrew Stables and Lee Curnow, one converted by Jenson Olstrum, got them back in the picture.
But by the time Wath Brow scored their third try, four minutes from time by David Bradley, Glasson had forged well clear. Robbie Bagley added the conversion.
Ellis Nixon had set the ball rolling with the fourth Glasson try on 44 minutes before Matthew Burns crossed six minutes later.
Kirkup completed his hat-trick on 57 minutes and added a fourth nine minutes later. Matthew Johnson scored his second after 70 minutes and Luke Johnson ended with six conversions.
So much good has been happening at the Cockermouth club over the past few months it’s been disappointing to see the Titans having to abandon their A team this week and pull out of Division One.
It wasn’t a good day on the field for the first team, either, as they were overwhelmed 82-8 at champions Ellenborough.
They were under the cosh at half-time, trailing 34-0 but at least they crossed the home line twice in the second half through Ryan Scott and Luke Armstrong.
The Ellenborough tries came from recent recruit from Glasson, Gary Tierney (3), Zac Olstrum (2), Kevin Hoban (2), Owen Hoyles (2), John Todd (2), Keenan Winter, John Irving and Shane Ackerley.
Hoyles rounded off a fine personal afternoon by converting 13 of the 14 tries.
Ellenborough were unable to complete a week-end double as their A team lost a hard-fought Division One battle at Egremont A, going down 14-10.
It was closely contested throughout and at half-time Egremont had just edged ahead 8-6.
Dylan Biggins, Jake McBride and man of the match Toby Corrie scored the Egremont tries, one pof which was converted by Kevin Brown.
Kian Dempsey and Arron Lawson crossed for Elbra and Brett Stevenson improved one of them. Shane Ackerley was their man of the match.
The game between Hensingham A and Kells A was called off because the hosts were unable to raise a team.
