Hound trailing broke new ground in 1965 when the first international meeting was held at Mungrisedale.
Fast forward 57 years and the latest international trail is being staged tomorrow at Cleamire.
Now that’s a new trail, nearest to Westward/Caldbeck, as finding fresh venues is proving a major obstacle to organisers.
Last year, the Border Association staged the international at Greenhead, and this year it’s the turn of the HTA who have eventually gone with Cleamire.
The Aspatria and Wigton Area will be responsible for putting on the event, with Cleamire last used many years ago.
HTA vice chairman Andy Horn has been responsible for creating the new venue, getting all the permission required and preparing the team of trailers who will be involved in setting up the test for the hounds.
Horn said: “It’s very stressful setting up a new trail like this, as you’re always concerned that you’ve got it right. We don’t want any void trails for under time or over time.
“I’m happy with the terrain the hounds will be covering because I think it’s a fair test with fields and dykes, along with some open moorland.
“With the weather promising we are expecting a good attendance and some good racing.
“Although the vast majority of the 204 entries are from the HTA and the Border we do have three from Yorkshire.
“Although no Irish entries have been received they can enter on the day and we do know we have some enthusiasts coming over from Ireland in a camper van. Maybe they will bring a hound or two with them!”
Last year’s international had 131 entries and this time there will be 204 contesting the six trails.
The HTA have the vast majority with 178, while the Border provide 23 entries and the aforementioned three from Yorkshire.
There is £2,100 in prize money up for grabs across the six trails with the seniors getting them underway at 1-30pm and 34 of them will go to the slip.
That’s followed by the senior maidens with 43 entries; the open pups has 20; there will be 31 puppy maidens; and a total of 60 open restricted.
The meeting is brought to a close by the veterans trail which has 16 entries.
