Volunteers from Maryport Rescue were called out after a rabbit was startled and jumped into the town’s harbour.
The tide was out and the team made their way across the harbour to try and save the rabbit – although sadly, the animal did not survive.
They were called at about 9.30am today, July 1. Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team was also in attendance.
Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Concerns arose from a Facebook post in which members of the public had offered to go into the mud to recover the animal, so Maryport Rescue deployed their rescue paths across the mud to recover the animal.
“We would like to remind the public that the mud is a very dangerous place, and under no circumstances should anyone attempt to enter it, for any reason.
“Should you get stuck in mud, advice is to lay flat and spread as much weight as you can across the surface, and dial 999, asking for the Coastguard.
