Quick-thinking Workington RNLI volunteers helped avert a tragedy at a West Cumbrian festival.
The crews of the all-weather and inshore lifeboats were at Harbour Fest at Whitehaven as one of the attractions – but an eagle-eyed member spotted a young boy collapse backwards and immediately raised the alarm.
The youngster had slipped and fallen backwards, hitting his head on the slipway. Workington RNLI crew members dashed over to help.
The boy was unconscious and began to have seizures.
Crew members immediately grabbed the inshore lifeboat’s first aid kit and ran over to the youngster.
John Stobbart, Workington RNLI coxswain, said: “They began to administer first aid and oxygen and took charge, as first responders, until the ambulance service arrived. They were thanked by the family.
“We are very proud of their quick-thinking and actions that helped that boy when he needed it. They handled the situation accordingly.”
